The risk of condensation damage during a voyage is very real, especially in general purpose containers. in serious cases this leads to huge losses and resultant claims.

The following section highlights the problems associated with condensation and also identifies the main sources of condensation during a voyage.

 

Heat Radiation

Where possible, cargo that is sensitive to condensation must be protected from the extremes of radiant heat and extreme cold. Examples are:

· When the container is in the terminal stack: shaded stow required.
· Aboard ship: underdeck stow or protected deck stow required.
· Lengthy road/rail transit.

For example:

A non-insulated container containing bagged coffee at the terminal in Assab is subjected to the radiant heat of the sun. The air inside the container will become heated and absorb moisture from the coffee, thus establishing conditions of high humidity. Night cooling can cause the temperature of the container skin to fall below the dew point of the humid conditions within the container thus causing condensation.

The need to avoid radiant heat is emphasised in this example and late packing of coffee prior to export would also help. Also long, exposed periods at transshipment terminals such as Djibouti during the summer months should be avoided.

At destinations with near zero temperatures it is important that early delivery of sensitive/hygroscopic cargoes is effected. if this is not done the cargo can experience what we call the "cold shock" of the first night ashore.
