The risk of condensation damage during a voyage is very real, especially in general purpose containers. in serious cases this leads to huge losses and resultant claims.

The following section highlights the problems associated with condensation and also identifies the main sources of condensation during a voyage.

 

Cargo Sweat

Cargo Sweat occurs when the surface of the cargo is cooler than the dew point (condensation point) of the air in the container. Droplets of water then form on the surface of the cargo. This occurs when moving cargo from a cold or temperate climate to a tropical one. The air and cargo containing the moisture or watervapour condenses on the cargo or its packaging.

For example:- A cargo of canned goods is loaded in winter conditions in Europe and transported to the tropical belt. The container will gradually heat up during transit to the warmer, moist climate. The cargo temperature will also heat up gradually, but lag behind the temperature increase of the container itself.

if ventilation was allowed to take place the warm moist air from outside the container would condense on the cold cargo. in this case it is better to avoid ventilation during transit and allow the cargo temperature to gradually increase thereby restoring equilibrium between the cargo temperature and the outside air.
